What was once the impassable Arctic now provides 00:01:21.000 --> 00:01:33.000 the quickest routes for attack from a wide sector of Europe and Asia. Be set by 00:01:33.000 --> 00:01:39.000 the nightmare of this threat, the American government acted. With the advice of 00:01:39.000 --> 00:01:43.001 some of the country's best scientists brought together at MIT's famed Lincoln 00:01:43.001 --> 00:01:49.000 Laboratories, experimental installations like this one were built and tested in 00:01:49.000 --> 00:01:55.000 northern Alaska by the Western Electric Company. Guided by the successful tests, 00:01:56.000 --> 00:02:01.000 the nation's leaders decided on a tremendous undertaking. This was to build with 00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:14.001 the cooperation of Canada, a radar early warning line north of the coast across 00:02:14.001 --> 00:02:21.001 the continent to Baffin Island opposite Greenland. From all over America they came. They checked the 00:06:09.001 --> 00:06:14.001 educated guesses of the photo interpretation men, explored the beach approaches, 00:06:15.001 --> 00:06:19.001 conducted tests to be sure each site would be well suited for placing the new 00:06:19.001 --> 00:06:24.001 radar and radio systems being designed for the line and mark the sites to guide 00:06:24.001 --> 00:06:31.001 the construction crews. As they completed their missions site by site, a 00:06:31.001 --> 00:06:37.000 3,000 mile long strip somewhere north of the Arctic Circle began to shed its 00:06:37.000 --> 00:06:42.001 timeless anonymity to take on an historic identity, due line. 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:49.001 Close on the heels of the siting teams came the advanced construction crews. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:56.000 First a few, an advanced construction party went in by light ski plane. It would include a west coast sea lift out of Long Beach in Seattle, 00:10:24.001 --> 00:10:28.000 another on the east coast from Philadelphia and Halifax, 00:10:30.001 --> 00:10:34.000 and an inland barge lift down 00:10:34.000 --> 00:10:41.000 the Indian and American 00:10:41.000 --> 00:10:45.001 commercial aircraft of all types and sizes were bearing the full burden of supply 00:10:45.001 --> 00:10:51.000 for the early construction along the line. They flew what by all odds was the 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:58.000 greatest commercial airlift in history. All together aircraft 00:10:58.000 --> 00:11:03.000 carried 30,000 tons of machinery and supplies to do line sites before the ice 00:11:03.000 --> 00:11:09.001 landing strips softened in May and June of that first year. Nothing stopped the 00:11:09.001 --> 00:11:16.001 airlift. Planes were lost and courageous men gave their lives but the supply of 00:11:16.001 --> 00:11:18.000 the construction work went on. 00:11:21.000 --> 00:11:27.001 In the camps of the construction contractors living conditions were primitive but 00:11:27.001 --> 00:11:34.001 already the crews were changing the face of that far north country. The crews built 00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:47.001 roadways, developed water supply sources, laid down building foundations, and 00:11:47.001 --> 00:11:50.000 made the beaches ready for the sea lifts. 00:11:53.000 --> 00:12:00.000 At the same time to the appointed places of assembly for the sea 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:06.000 lifts came the materials that would be the do line. Came the tools to build it. 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:12.000 Every item was handled with dispatch according to a plan carefully designed to 00:12:12.000 --> 00:12:15.000 put it in the right spot on the beach when it realigned destination. 00:12:17.001 --> 00:12:24.001 Supplies of petroleum, oil, and lubricants built up acre on acre at Long Beach on 00:12:24.001 --> 00:12:31.000 the west coast. Philadelphia in the east. In June they started loading on the 00:12:31.000 --> 00:12:38.000 west coast, the petroleum first. The ships were operated by the military sea transport service of the United 00:12:55.001 --> 00:13:01.001 States Navy. On board would be soldiers of the US Army Transportation Corps 00:13:01.001 --> 00:13:06.000 intensively trained to handle the unloading of the ships and deliveries to the 00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:12.000 beaches. On the do line there would be no going down to the store for a loaf of 00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:18.000 bread or a package of nails or anything else. Everything had to be transported 00:13:18.001 --> 00:13:22.001 there and you'd be hard put to name an item that wasn't stowed in these ships. 00:13:23.001 --> 00:13:30.001 The west coast sea lift was to be in convoy.
